Tickets in Riga pubic transport to cost a bit less after January 1

After January 1, 2014, when Latvia will introduce the euro, the price of one trip in Riga public transport will be EUR 0.70, but a ticket sold by public transport drivers will cost EUR 1.00. Today the prices in euros proposed by "Rīgas satiksme" were approved by the Commission for Licensing of Commercial Passenger Transportation Services of Riga City Council.

The price of one ticket, if converted according to the exchange rate set by the Bank of Latvia, would be EUR 0.711, yet the price is rounded up downwards. Vadims Baraņņiks, chairman of the Riga City Council’s Traffic and Transport Committee, says it is being done primarily for the convenience of Riga residents and guests.

„Given the introduction of the euro, the local government and "Rīgas satiksme" have found the possibility to reduce the price of tickets in public transport. In this period, when a majority of population does not feel the effects of the overall growth rates of the country in their wallets, it would not be correct to round up the price of tickets downwards,” he said.

The prices of one-month tickets, tickets for a certain number of trips and night buses will also change, accordingly. More information is available in the table below.
